The assignment this week was to create a minimalist movie poster for The Martian using only simple shapes — rectangle, ellipse, triangle and lines — AND keep it limited to black and white.

The assignment focused in on the relationships of shapes, space and movement. Our assigned reading — two interviews with Paul Rand — really helped me frame the project in my head and pushed me to think about design further. With the exception of the half semester class, Visual Language, last year, it is a field I have never truly studied, but really interests me.
Rune’s Javascript library has also been intriguing to learn. Since I do not have a background as a fine artist, learning to design within code is an interesting proposition.
